Washing our hair: Have we been doing it wrong all along?

clipartLast night while I was on Pinterest, I came across this article on Refinery 29 and it literally blew my mind. The article originally posted on xoJane, talked about how we have been washing our hair wrong! That’s right, I said wrong!

So naturally I read the title and was very curious as to how we have been doing it wrong all these years! We’ve all been taught to wash our hair with shampoo, rinse and then apply our conditioner and rinse, right? Well this article stated that we should be conditioning our ends first, let it sit for a couple of minutes, rinse and then shampoo. You’re probably saying to yourself “huh”? I know I did too. But you know, after I thought about it and finished the article it kind of made sense, especially for me. I have fine hair but a good amount of it. I also have wavy/curly hair so I especially need to make sure I use conditioner. But I too, like the author, notice that some conditioners weigh my hair down and it feels greasy and flat by the end of the day. I push myself to not wash it everyday because we read every where that you’re not supposed to. So usually for me by day 2 I have to wear it up or curl it.  I know I’m not alone on this one. So I decided I was going to try this method of washing my hair.

This morning when I got in the shower it felt wrong. Like the kind of wrong that you knew you weren’t supposed to be doing something this way. But after wetting my hair, I reached for the conditioner and put the amount I normally do on my ends. I did my normal routine to let the conditioner sit and then rinsed it out. I then reached for my shampoo. I will admit, my hair felt soft at my ends because of the conditioner but made sure to still shampoo them.

Once I was ready to comb my hair, I still applied my It’s a 10 leave-in conditioner (my saving grace) and my hair felt soft but not slick. It felt a little different but still easy enough to get the comb through. My hair is the type that no matter what I need conditioner. I always apply my Heatsmart Serum before I blow dry my hair by Thermafuse. This product is amazing.

Now normally when I’m done blowdrying my hair, my hair feels soft but thin. Today it feels full and soft!! I’m dying to see if I can go a day without it looking greasy and flat. I would definitely suggest trying this out. It’s going to feel wrong, but if it’s going to make my hair feel right, I’m all for it!

Happy washing!

I suppose it’s a bit like putting in a mask for a day and then shampooing it out, makes perfect sense!
