Cheering, loud music, and weights being dropped on the floor are some of the things you may hear when you enter a CrossFit box. Four years my cousin got into it and loved it. Three years ago my best friend joined and loved it. I remember thinking, “eh. I don’t get it. Why do you want to work out like that?” They both would give me the same answer, “proving to yourself how well you can do and the people”.
Well, I’m here to tell you I now know why they love it. Tonight I took part in a special night. One that was dedicated to their very own, Will Huntington. The WOD (workout of the day) were things everyone who took part in could do and at the end you had an opportunity to make a PR (personal record). I have to say just being able to get through my first WOD was a PR for me!
Being in this atmosphere, as an outsider, you can see why these people love working out everyday. Not only are they ‘working out’ they are spending time with people who have become like family. You cheer one another on and you don’t give up. Everyone waits until the last person finishes.
Tonight, I have never seen so many people come in and out of a gym to workout. Not only were we there to workout, but we were there to pay tribute and remember a wonderful person. Every person there was part of this family one way or another. I am proud to say that I have become to know these people through my best friend, and they are a one of a kind.
I know some people will say “but it’s just a gym”. I get it. I used to not “get it” either, but until you spend time with them in their “home”, you will truly understand why they are always together inside and outside the box.
It’s a family you choose and stand by. As this week continues and this “family” has to say good bye to one of their own, know that even us “outsiders” feel for you and pray for you. Lean on one another to heal and continue to kick ass in and out of the box.
I’m proud to say I was able to meet Will and know what a bright, happy and beautiful human being he was. I am also proud to say that I have come to know a lot of you. You all are a family anyone would be lucky to be a part of!
All fists in “1-2-3. We love you Will”
